    THE DUROMETER (SHORE A) SCALE

The durometer scale for bumper plates typically refers to the Shore A scale, which is the standard international system which measures the hardness of rubber. The "Durometer" instrument used to conduct the tests provides a rating of 0 to 100. A reading of over 80 is considered more than acceptable for a bumper plates. Consider this, the majority of car tyres have a rating of approximately 65.

Below are the common Durometer Ratings for Bumper Plates:

    Lower-end / Economy bumper plates:
    70–75A

    • Softer rubber
    • More bounce
    • Less durable and noisier on drop

    Mid-range bumper plates:
    80–85A

    • Balanced durability and bounce
    • Standard for many gym-quality plates

    High-end / Competition bumper plates:
    90–95A

    • Harder rubber
    • Minimal bounce
    • High durability, often IWF standards

    What It Means:

    • Higher durometer (90–95A) → Less bounce, more durability, tighter tolerances.
    • Lower durometer (70–80A) → More bounce, softer impact, but can degrade faster.
